Needle Aspiration of Cancerous Cells from the Thyroid Gland (Medullary Carcinoma of Thyroid)

The clinical doctor noticed a very large mass of thyroid gland of this 57 year old male. A fine needle aspiration, much less expensive than other diagnostic procedures, yielded a diagnostic sample confirming medullary carcinoma of the thyroid gland, AND a SERUM CALCITONIN LEVEL WAS 27.9 pg/ml (normal range 0-7.5 pg/ml). This diagnosis was made within a few hours of receiving the sample from an imaging ultrasound clinic, and patient will not encounter an expensive bill as oppose to having this procedure done in a hospital or ambulatory surgery clinic setting, and having the pathologist run up a bill on special studies (i.e. immunostains).
